    What is Outdoor Art?

    What is Outdoor Art

As our technology evolves and changes that shows up on our homes, they begin to look more like the set of a futuristic movie rather than a home.  More practical with a lot less integration with our natural surroundings.  Another way that technology has affected us is in how we create art, while we can create magnificent digital art we have lost some of the old methods of creating art.  People don’t decorate their homes like they used to and instead have turned to video games or reality television.  Outdoor art has become popular, it leaves the inside of our home practical but the outdoors has become our sanctuary.  So what is outdoor art, let’s have a look.

You really don’t need much to change the outdoors and make it look incredible.  In the summer months when most of us spend a lot of time outdoors so it is important to create an environment that is appealing and stress free.  Here are some of the ways you can use outdoor art to create a beautiful sanctuary for you and your family.

    Bonsai Trees

Trees are beautiful but you may not have the space for a mighty oak, on the other hand a bonsai can go anywhere.  You can have a bonsai on an apartment balcony.  The art in bonsai’s is in the cutting and shaping them to suit our tastes.  You can be as creative as you like.  Here is some more info on working with bonsai trees.

    Fountains and Water Features

Much like trees fountains appeal on a universal level.  Water soothes us and we depend on water for our very survival.  Fountains and the sounds of bubbling water can soothe us after an exhausting day.  You can create a water feature with different sculptures and create something brilliant.

    Canvas Art

There is nothing stopping you from taking art that normally goes inside and putting it outside.  In another post we showed you how to waterproof your art so that it can be hung outside.  Don’t limit yourself to landscape paintings you can use any type of art that you like.

How to Waterproof a Painting for Outdoors

With summer upon us we are spending more of our time outdoors and you want the perfect outdoor oasis in which to relax after a long day at work.  In order to create the perfect outdoor spot you can take your cues from your style indoors.  You can take some of your favorite pieces of art from inside the house and move them to the porch or patio.  There is a little prep work to be done first so let us show you how to waterproof a painting for outdoors, it is fairly easy and it won’t take long at all.

Materials you are going to need all of which can be found at any art supply store or online.

    • A piece of art
    • Polyurethane spray sealer
    • Mod Podge clear acrylic sealer

    Step 1: Sealing the Frame

You are going to want to start with sealing the frame of the canvas and for that you will use the polyurethane spray sealer.  Roll back and tape down any canvas that is loose on the back and make sure you cover the frame thoroughly.  You want to leave it to dry thoroughly, leaving it overnight should be more than enough time.

    Step 2:  Sealing the Canvas

Now you want to make sure that the canvas gets properly sealed and for that you want to spray the entire thing, front and back with the Mod Podge.  You can follow the instructions on the can and make sure you spray in a well-ventilated area.  After the canvas has dried thoroughly you should re-spray it just to be on the safe side.  You want your porch to look good not to let the weather destroy your art.

    Things to Watch Out For

If you’re piece of art is white then don’t use a polyurethane spray, it can leave behind a yellow tint, spray on just the frame alone.  This was meant to seal outdoor furniture not art so be wary while using it.

Mod Podge has both an outdoor sealer and a clear acrylic sealer, while it may seem like a good idea to use the outdoor sealer, it isn’t.  The outdoor sealer can leave behind a sticky film on your canvas that looks terrible.  The clear sealer works just as well and it is much easier to use.  If you want you can use both, but use the acrylic sealer first to seal in the painting and avoid the sticky residue.

You are now ready to hang your painting outside and it should weather the elements just fine.  Now, sit back and relax, enjoying your outdoor oasis!
